Prize winning science image
Among the winners is Heidi Strauss, a Research Assistant in the Centenary Institute’s Centre for Rare Diseases and Gene Therapy, who secured third place.
Heidi’s image featured human patient-derived organoids, miniature structures cultivated in laboratories to replicate the intricacies of human organ functions.
In this particular case, Heidi and the research team were investigating a specific protein called GPC3 (displayed in green) that is overexpressed in pancreatic tumours. This overproduction is often associated with more aggressive tumour growth. The ultimate aim of the researchers is to harness CAR-T therapy to target GPC3 to help improve patient outcomes.
The image will be featured on the July 2024 cover of the prestigious Cytotherapy journal.
