Dr Mojdeh Abbasi at Science Meets Parliament

Representing not only the Centenary Institute but also the Australian Society of Stem Cell Research (ASSCR) and the University of Sydney, Dr Abbasi joined nearly 400 STEM professionals and 80 Parliamentarians for two days of engagement, insight and inspiration.
Event highlights said Dr Abbasi were the sessions that showcased science’s evolving role in policy and society. Experts from STEM, government, media and advocacy—including First Nations leaders and even an astronaut—shared diverse perspectives, reinforcing the critical role of research in shaping evidence-based policy.
A further highlight noted by Dr Abbasi was the Gala Dinner held at the National Museum of Australia, where key speakers underscored the importance of science in shaping the nation’s future. This included talks from the Governor General, Her Excellency the Hon Sam Mostyn AC; Federal Minister for Industry and Science, the Hon Ed Husic MP; and Australia’s Chief Scientist, Emeritus Professor Tony Haymet.
As a part of ‘Science Meets Parliament’, Dr Abbasi also had the opportunity to meet Senator Larissa Waters to discuss the important role of stem cell therapy in tackling corneal blindness.
“The Senator showed a deep appreciation for biomedical research, advocating for both fundamental discoveries and its speedy translation into therapies, to better improve people’s lives,” said Dr Abbasi.
Reflecting on the event Dr Abbasi added, “I had an incredible two days engaging with passionate scientists from diverse fields. I came away with a new appreciation for policy-making and the vital role that science plays in informing decisions at the highest levels.”
