2024 International Day of Women and Girls in Science
What inspired you to become a scientist?
It was just something that I was always interested in. I had an amazing high school biology teacher who inspired me to pursue science at uni, and then when I was finishing up undergrad, I decided I wanted to continue, first through honours and then into a PhD program
What have you found to be your biggest challenge being a woman in science?
Staying true to yourself and your values, resolving to always act with integrity, and supporting your female colleagues through all the challenges that come with being a woman in a male-dominated industry.
What advice do you have for young women aspiring to enter the field of science?
The work can be hard but it is work worth doing. Nurture curiosity as that will keep you motivated to keep asking questions.
In your opinion, what contributions do women bring to the field of science that might be unique or distinct?
I think women bring a considered and conscientious approach to work that benefits the progression of scientific work, and the inclusion of more diverse perspectives is key to avoiding bias.
