In Memoriam: The Hon. Michael Egan AO

In his twelve-year tenure as Chair, Mr Egan’s visionary guidance greatly shaped and strengthened the Institute.

Under his stewardship, the Institute achieved remarkable growth, characterised by a 45% increase in staff size and the expansion of laboratories from 10 to 19. He also oversaw $112 million in grant income secured by the Institute, facilitating critical advances in life-saving medical research.

Mr Joseph Carrozzi AM, who served alongside Mr Egan on the Board and who later succeeded him as Chair, emphasized that Mr Egan’s strategic vision and unwavering commitment to excellence played a critical role in creating an environment conducive to ground-breaking research.

“Michael’s dedication to advancing scientific knowledge, coupled with his unwavering commitment to the Centenary Institute’s mission, leaves a lasting legacy,” said Mr Carrozzi.

“His contributions will be remembered not only in the growth and success of the Institute but also in the lives that stand to benefit from the advancements made under his leadership.”

Professor Marc Pellegrini, Centenary Executive Director, said the Institute extended its deepest condolences to Mr Egan’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.

“We honour Mr Egan’s memory and express our gratitude for the profound impact he made on the Centenary Institute over many successful years,” said Professor Pellegrini.

“His committed leadership during his tenure as Chair laid the foundation for the success that the Institute enjoys today. I offer my heartfelt sympathy to everyone affected by his loss.”
