The Centenary Institute’s Professor Angelo Izzo has talked about the burden of tuberculosis (TB) on society and his role in looking to develop a next-generation vaccine to help combat the devastating disease, in an interview on ABC Radio Sydney’s Drive program.
Caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis, approximately 10 million people fall ill with TB each year. The infectious disease is also responsible for about 1.5 million deaths annually.
“What we’re trying to do now is to develop vaccines that promote long-term TB immunity in people to improve and to save lives,” said Professor Izzo.
