A group of Australian researchers, including Professor Phil Hansbro, Director of the Centenary UTS Centre for Inflammation, have won a Fukuchi (Respirology) Award for ‘outstanding original research paper’ published in the journal Respirology.
The award winning paper found that older people and men tend to have higher levels of the enzyme ACE2 on the cells of their lower lungs – and that this may be the reason for their increased risk from COVID-19.
Selected by a panel of world-renowned international researchers, the journal award recognises the two top original research papers published in Respirology last year, based on novelty, importance, methodology, clarity and overall quality.
Titled, ‘ACE2 expression is elevated in airway epithelial cells from older and male healthy individuals but reduced in asthma’, the study and resulting paper was led by Professor Peter Wark from the Hunter Medical Research Institute and the University of Newcastle.
