SMH (Good Weekend article) features Professor Phil Hansbro
Professor Phil Hansbro, Director of the Centenary UTS Centre for Inflammation has featured in a Good Weekend article discussing the role of inflammation in health.
Inflammation is increasingly being found to play crucial roles in the development of many major diseases, including Alzheimer’s, heart disease, cancer, respiratory diseases, diabetes, tuberculosis and COVID-19.
“There’s been a growing realisation among scientists and clinicians in recent years of the importance of inflammation, and now it’s a rapidly evolving field,” says Professor Philip Hansbro.
“Because inflammation is implicated in so many diseases, the better we understand it, the better we’ll be able to widen our arsenal of treatments.”
In the article, Professor Hansbro discusses the role of the gut microbiome on inflammatory diseases and disorders.
“There are something like 100 trillion bacteria in your gut and about 6000 species,” he says.
Titled, ‘The silent killer: Why medical research is fired up about inflammation’, the article can be read in its entirety on the Sydney Morning Herald web site.
